Camano is the quiet island most people drive onto without realizing they have left the mainland. There is no ferry: a short bridge from Stanwood carries you straight across, so Camano combines island scenery and saltwater with the simplicity of a road connection. It shares Island County with Whidbey but feels distinct, more rural, more residential, with no incorporated town and few commercial services of its own. For buyers, Camano is the value-and-quiet option: bridge-connected and on-grid, but genuinely peaceful, with residents leaning on nearby Stanwood for most errands.

Camano has no downtown. It is a string of residential neighborhoods, waterfront communities, rural acreage and parks spread across roughly 40 square miles, with a strong community-park and conservation culture knit together by volunteers. The absence of a commercial core is precisely the appeal for many residents: this is a place to live, garden and look at the water, with the convenience of Stanwood and I-5 only a bridge away. It draws retirees, remote workers and second-home owners who want calm without the logistics of a ferry island.

The outdoors is the whole point. Camano Island State Park offers shoreline, forest, camping and sweeping views across Saratoga Passage to Whidbey and the Olympics. Neighboring Cama Beach Historical State Park preserves a 1930s saltwater fishing-resort setting on the beach; note that its historic overnight cabins were permanently closed in 2024 due to seawall, septic and cultural-site issues, so the park is now day-use in that area. Barnum Point and other county and Land Trust preserves add trails and beach access, and the protected waters are excellent for crabbing, kayaking, birding and quiet boating. Life here is low-key by design, gardening, beachcombing, wildlife and water views rather than nightlife.

Camano typically offers more house and land for the money than the ferry islands, which is a large part of its draw. The stock ranges from modest ramblers and cabins to substantial waterfront and view homes, modern farmhouse and contemporary customs on acreage, and bluff properties overlooking the passages. Because there is no sewer, wells and septic are standard, and waterfront and bluff parcels carry the usual shoreline, erosion and drainage checks. The bridge connection makes financing, inspections and remote purchases simpler than on the ferry islands.

Do I need a ferry to get to Camano Island? No. Camano is reached by the Camano Gateway Bridge from Stanwood via State Route 532, with no ferry involved, which makes commuting and errands much simpler than on the San Juans or south Whidbey.

Can I still stay in the Cama Beach cabins? No. The Washington State Parks Commission voted in 2024 to permanently close the historic Cama Beach cabins because of seawall, septic and cultural-site complications. The park remains open for day use, but overnight cabin stays are no longer available.

Why is Camano often cheaper than the other islands? It has no town and few commercial services, so residents rely on nearby Stanwood, and that quieter, lower-amenity profile, combined with a simple bridge connection, tends to keep prices more attainable while still offering genuine island scenery.
